March 1, 2007 by Administrator

Domain Name Basics and How to reserve a Domain Name

The first stone of your website »palace« begins when you reserve domain name. I suggest you read this page through and understand it ENTIRELY, because it contains important information, that you have to know before you register.

guide_noticeIf you already know about domain names, reserve domain name here .

What is a domain name ?

domain name http image Domain name is a unique name that identifies an Internet site. Just like house numbers, every web site has its own number. Since it is hard to remember a number like http://255.154.255.xxx people have invented domain names that are linked to these numbers. The web address for this site is easysiteguide.com.

Each domain name or web address has two parts:

  1. The label. It can be up to 63 characters long containing letters or numbers.
  2. The extension is what follows after a .dot. The most common extensions are .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info.

What comes with a domain name?

Domain name has 2 functions: it is the name of your website and it is the name of your email. A lot of people don`t know that when you reserve domain name lets say yourname.com you are also entitled to all the emails with that name.

And if you own domain name that consists of that keywords, BAM! you will have free traffic coming in from search engines. actionCheck for yourself – type any keyword in google and you will see that in top 10 results there is always some website with keywords you have searched for in their domain name.
  2. If your business is local based and you have no advantage of traffic coming from all over the world you should register a company name. That way you can grow your brand name in specific area.

5 Ways of making money with your website

February 28, 2007 by Administrator

Different ways of making money online:

1. Sell your own products

If you have your own products and want to sell them on internet you will need these things to get it rolling: A presentation of your product, an online store, a payment processor and a delivery provider. Yes it looks like a lot of work, but if you are smart you will get a bundle that has the whole package waiting for you to insert your products and $$!

2. Sell your services

Do you have skills people would pay for? Than offer your services. This can be designing logos, banners, or website designs to name just a few.

You will need a presentation of your service; what it includes, contact and a price. Next thing is a payment option – best would be paypal, egold or some other e-currency. You ll also need a way to deliver these services. An email which allows big attachements would be great or a protected folder on your website where your customers will download what they ordered.

3. Sell others products or services – Affiliate Marketing

This one is the most popular. Become an affiliate and earn commissions on what you sell.
The best way to do it is to join an affiliate network, which will do a lot for you. They will be in touch with companies, they will do the processing and they will send you the checks!

4. Sell informational products

If you know things other people would pay for, create an informational product and sell it.
All you have to do is create a nice little booklet with high quality information and pack it in .pdf format or compile it in an ebook.
Than create a sales letter with reasons why people absolutely need to buy your ebook and put it on your website. Next thing to do is set the price and a payment gateway. You can do it with Paypal – its free.

5. Monetize your hq content website

If you can provide information of great value, that will bring lots of visitors you should join Google Adsense. You just put a little box on your pages and Google will provide content-relevant text ads. Each time your visitors will click on it, you will get a commission.

How to create a great Favorites Icon

February 28, 2007 by Administrator

Favicon is a small image (16×16 pixels), which is shown in your browsers location bar, next to the URL. The easiest way to create one is to use an icon editing software. Don`t have one? No problem. You can download it for free form our Webmaster Center. You can also use one of the online favicon generators you will find at the bottom of this page.

How do I create a Favicon .ico File ?

  1. Create an image that is 16×16 pixels in size. You could also use an image you like and resize it. But remember, the image has to be in proportion (50×50, 100×100) or your favicon will not look good.
  2. Save the image as an .ICO file. Name it exactly: "favicon.ico" or it will not work. Upload it to your website s root directory (that`s next to your index.htm file).
  3. Add the following lines of code inside the <head> section of your pages.

    <link rel="shortcut icon" xhref="http://example.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
    <link rel="icon" xhref="http://example.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

  4. You re done.

Testing the Favicon

If you are using Internet Explorer and your favicon is not showing up, make sure you clear your browsers cache. You can do it by pressing Ctrl and F5 at the same time.

Favicon Benefits or Why should I use a Favorites Icon?

Have you ever asked yourself why do all the big companies have favicons?

Here are the reasons:

  • Favicon or a page icon is a great tool to brand your website. Since many pages still don`t have a favicon, your page will stand out from others!
  • Your site will gain a professional and unique look, which can cause more links to your site and that means better rankings in search engines.
  • You will save bandwidth since pages without favicons produce 404 File not found error files.

Free Online Favicon generators:

No problem if you don`t have an image editor. You can create your icon online. Try some of these great favicon makers.

  • 1Favicon – great website with lots of information about favicon.ico and a Tutorial to make your own.
  • Favicon Maker
  • Dynamic Drive Favicon Generator
  • Favicon text generator
  • Graphics Guru Favicon Tool

Learn Important Web Hosting Features

February 28, 2007 by Administrator

fp_serverWhen I started my first website the best web hosts were determined by the size of disk space they provided. Everybody wanted to get as much space as possible. Things have changed. Nowadays space isn’t the crucial factor.

5 Most Important Hosting Features are:

1. Reliability:
The main function of a web host is making your web site available for other users of Internet all the time. Well, mostly all of the time. The best web hosts are operational more than 99.5 % of their time and they guarantee it. Stay away of web hosts that don’t give you such guarantee.

2. Support
This one is extremely important. Web hosts usually offer telephone support, live chat and email support. Make sure you have support available any time you need it. And I really mean anytime. If you can’t contact your web host during the weekend you have a potential problem. The best thing to do is to test them. Call them to see how responsive they are. If they don’t respond to your email in a timely manner consider choosing another host.

3. Price
You would be fooling yourself if this wasn’t an important factor. The thing is, price is connected with the first two factors. Higher prices do not make a good web host, but they raise the chance of getting good support and high reliability. I learned this lesson myself.

When I started my first web page I had a very low budget. I found a cheap hosting that promised me almost anything, but soon made my life full of painful moments. My web site was constantly up and down, without them even knowing that. My visitors were complaining they couldn’t send me emails. I tried to contact this web hosting company but they were unresponsive for several days. Soon I had nothing else to do than move my files to another host. That was the last time I had chosen a cheap web host.
Now best web hosts come with a money back guarantee which is great – don’t even bother with a web host that doesn’t offer you that.

4. Control Panel
Control panel is the page from which you control everything about your web site. You log in to control panel using your user name and password. You can edit your files there, add new email accounts, see usage of your disk space or statistics of your visitors to name just a few. There are differences in control panels among hosts so make sure your control panel can do what you want. You don’t wanna call your web host every time you want to know how many visitors you had last week.

5. Technical details
Disk space: is the amount of space you get. Most web hosts give you more space than you can use.
Data transfer: is the amount of data transferred from your site to your visitors.
Email: number of email accounts you can open.

To sum up – these are indicators of a good web host:

  • 99.5% + up time
  • 24/7 support
  • price: what you pay is what you get
  • powerful control panel
  • Reasonable amount of disk space and data transfer

Hosting types explained

February 28, 2007 by Administrator

Different needs – Different Hosting types

Free hosting – is what the name says!

Means that you don’t have to pay any money for hosting services. In practice it is not a very good option, I have been disappointed many, many, many, many times. But people just cant resist when something is free. Wrong! If you want a personal blog where you will just occasionally post some of your thoughts than go to Blogger . Its great! And its free! For everything else, especially for business get yourself a decent hosting provider. Look at our Best Hosts if you don’t have a clue what to choose.

Shared hosting

Means you share your files with other sites on the same server. This is extremely popular hosting type, since it is very affordable. You get your account packed with lots of space and bandwidth most users will never use. I have several shared hosting accounts for my websites and I recommend you to get yourself one of these .

Reseller hosting

Now if you want to make money in hosting industry, than Reseller hosting is just for you! You can start easily and with no costs. Just apply and set up a web host under your own brand, pricing structure and everything else. You will be provided with everything you will need and the money is also very good!

VPS

If you plan to have lots of domain names you should get yourself a Virtual Private Server – it is a extremely good deal, because Virtual Server is almost like a real one. Virtual means that you split hardware with other users on the same machine, and that cuts the operating costs. That way you get everything you need for a price just a bit higher than shared hosting. Oh, did I mention you can install your own software, scripts and stuff. However, if you don’t know what is root access, Apache or MySQL you should rather start with shared hosting.

Dedicated Server

Ah, that is a Dream of every Web master who starts doing business. Dedicated means that the whole server – machine – is reserved for 1 and only 1 website. Here is the deal: web hosts rents you one computer, software and a high speed Internet connection that is fast like a lightning. Dedicated servers hosting is the most powerful and most complex hosting. If your site receives a huge amount of traffic every day, you should get one of these.

Managed hosting

There is one drawback with dedicated hosting. If you are not a computer geek it could be hard to manage it. And that is exactly why hosting providers now offer Managed hosting – an expanded dedicated server hosting. Where with dedicated server you had to control the server 24/7, with managed hosting – the provider does that. So it is like a regular dedicated hosting with maintenance and monitoring 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Colocation

There is one other type of hosting which is not so common, but is pretty cool for clients who have lots of websites. It is called Colocation. It is a type of hosting where you bring your machine to a hosts data center. You are in total control of the server all the time. And the hosting company rents you rack space, high speed connection to Internet backbone, environment suitable for servers ( controlled air temperature, security, redundancy) and IT staff available for help.

Clustered hosting

Now that is it for regular websites. But what hosting types use the biggest sites and the sites with traffic of several thousands users an hour? I always knew there was something more…And there is! It is called Clustered hosting – This is a hosting type with lots of dedicated servers bonded together. It can be a minimum of 2 and up to several hundred servers and more (I believe Google has about 450.000 servers around the globe).Clustered means that the same page or service is served on multiple servers (often called mirrors). This enables high redundancy and great access speeds on different continents. Well if you are lucky enough to host a clustered website let me know!

If you are not sure which hosting is right for you, don’t worry! Go to our Hosting Wizard and discover which host suits you best! If you still cant decide send us an email with your details. We will help you!

If you want to be known locally or globally, you cant afford NOT to have a domain name.
Whats more, appearance of your domain name helps building your brand and boosts awareness in peoples minds.

How to create a good web site plan – Part 1

February 27, 2007 by Administrator

Web Site Planning

Probably you feel about web site planning like i did. I wanted to jump straight to design, without any plans about my website. But web site planning, as I figured it out later, is too important to be left out. Why you would ask? Here a are the reasons:

  • You will save time maintaining your site
  • Your site will be easier to use.
  • You will get more traffic
  • You will feel better.

So lets start at the beginning.

Planning a website is mainly two things: managing your project and managing website design. The first one will make your life easier and the last one will make life of your visitors easier.

Now you are gonna need some tools. I promise they wont be expensive and you will not have to leave comfort of your home to get them. Now get yourself a pencil and some paper.

Why can`t I do it in my word processor? Believe me, the good old pencil is the best tool for planning. Try it!

Now lets get to business!

Web Site Planning Step 1: Site Goals

Why do you want to make a website? Really. Before you start doing anything else answer yourself these questions (write them on a piece of paper):

  • What is the purpose of your website?
  • Who will visit your website?
  • What will they gain?
  • What is in it for you?

Work trough these questions until you have a clear idea what you want. It might help if you surf around the web and look for examples. Now you are looking at websites with different eyes. Try to analyze sites you think are great, and see what elements they have that make them so good.

Now that you have these answers write a one sentence summary of your project. If you cant make it in one sentence spend some more time on questions above.

I should be like this:

The aim of my website (Flying Carpets) is to provide great information about carpets to people from United Kingdom and recommend them carpet stores i trust.

…and should include a goal of your website.

How to create a good website plan – Part 2

February 27, 2007 by Administrator

Website Planning Step 2: Website Goals

Second step of Website Planning is Setting Website Goals. This is very important, because now you are going to transform your goals to site content and structure. Our imaginary site is about carpets. And our goal is to provide valuable information about carpets. So next thing we are going to do is to think about what our average visitor would want to know about carpets.

actionWrite it on paper, don’t limit yourself, just write anything that comes to your mind.

guide_noticeNote: If you have no idea, just search the web for your keyword and you will soon be on your way.

Now organize these things into sections. Keep in mind: you are providing valuable and organized information for your visitors. It works best for me if I draw a sketch of what my structure will look like.

Example:

Home
History of carpets
Making carpets
Buying carpets

New carpets
Used carpets
Shipping costs
Best Stores

About us

Website Planning Step 3: Designing page Layout

By now, you should have a clear vision of what you want to achieve (Step 1) and a sketch of your site structure (Step 2).

Now about design: Your main goal is designing the layout, that is how will be the content organized on a page.

The best thing to do is drawing a sketch on paper. Where should you place navigation, main text, links, photos and what colors should you use.

layout2

You don`t need to reinvent a wheel, check out some designs you like, and use what you want to make your own.

One of my mistakes (since i am not a web designer) was to fall into endless hours of editing graphics or design in graphics programs. I could never make it look the way i wanted to…argh. 🙂 If you are not a designer get someone do it for you or use a template. It is much cheaper and will save you lots of time and nerves.

guide_noticeNote: A consistent design will ensure great user experience and will make your site look more professional.

Conslusion:

Here are three steps of Website Planning:

  1. Set your website goals and follow them
  2. Convert these goals into structure and content
  3. Make a consistent page layout

Plan your work and work your plan and you will be on your way to success. If you ever get in doubts follow rule »less is more« and try to think what your visitors would want. Because they are the most important part of your website.
